Cytology, Fine-Needle Aspirate

Specimen Requirements

Immediately after collection of specimen, prepare by either of the following methods:

 

Aspirate Fixation
1. Expel needle contents into CytoLyt® solution supplied.
2. Rinse needle and syringe with CytoLyt® solution from same container.
3. Transport to laboratory immediately.
Note:  1. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), medical record number or date of birth, date and time of collection, and specimen source.
2. Please complete a “Surgical Pathology/Cytology Request Form,” including patient’s clinical history and diagnosis, and forward it with the specimen.

 

Slide Preparation
1. Expel a drop of aspirated material onto a slide.
2. Spread material by inverting a second slide over first and apply gentle pressure.
3. Separate slides and fix immediately by dropping slides into a specimen slide jar of 95% ethanol supplied.
4. Rinse needle and syringe with CytoLyt® solution.

5. Send both slides and CytoLyt® solution of rinsed material.

6. Transport to laboratory immediately.
Note:  1. Label frosted end of slide with patient’s name (first and last) and date of collection.

2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), medical record number or date of birth, date and time of collection, and specimen source.
3. Please complete a “Surgical Pathology/Cytology Request Form,” including patient’s clinical history and diagnosis, and forward it with the specimen.

Reference Values

An interpretive report will be provided.
