St. Clair Hospital LaboratorySpecimen Requirements
Collect specimen as follows:1. Patient should be well hydrated.
2. First-morning urine specimen should be voided and discarded. At this point cystectomy patients should a fresh stomal bag.
3. Second voided urine specimen is specimen of choice. Cystectomy patients should empty stomal bag after 30 mL to 50 ml of urine is collected.
4. If patients are collecting urine specimen at home, urine should be collected in cytology preservative, which is available in the outpatient laboratory.
5. Transport to laboratory immediately.
Note: 1. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), medical record number or date of birth, date and time of collection, and specimen source.
2. Indicate on request form if urine is voided, catheterized, or obtained during a systo procedure or from a stomal bag.
3. Please complete a “Surgical Pathology/Cytology Request Form,” including patient’s clinical history and diagnosis, and forward it with the specimen.
