Vitamin B12 is an essential component in the production of DNA. A vitamin B12 deficiency can cause megaloblastic anemia.

Specimen Requirements

Draw venous blood sample in a serum gel (SST) tube OR in a plain, red-top tube(s). Spin down and send 1 mL of serum. Centrifuge blood as soon as possible, or send unspun blood to laboratory within 4 hours of draw.
Note:  If #FOLATE “Folate, Serum” is also ordered, avoid hemolysis.
