Methodology

Conventional Culture
Includes Gram stain, isolation, and identification of aerobic and anaerobic organisms. Susceptibility testing will be performed on all significant aerobic organisms.

Specimen Requirements

Fluid from any normally sterile body site (eg, pericardial, peritoneal, synovial, or thoracentesis) collected as follows:
1. Aseptically collect 1 mL to 5 mL of fluid by needle aspiration or at time of surgery.
2. Inject specimen into a screw-capped, sterile container or a plain, glass, red-top tube.
3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.
Note:  Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
