Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 1 hour of draw.

 

1 lithium heparin blood gas syringe (1 mL of lithium heparin cord blood). Syringe should be placed in wet ice slush immediately after drawing.
Note:  1. If baby is not listed in computer system, order on requisition using mother’s Address-O-Graph® but provide baby’s last name and sex (ie, “Smith, Baby Girl”).
2. Label specimen appropriately (arterial).

Reference Values

pH:  7.13-7.43 pH units
pCO2:  30-60 mm Hg
pO2:  5-25 mm Hg
HCO3:  12-39 mmol/L
