Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 1 hour of draw.

 

1 lithium heparin blood gas syringe (1 mL of lithium heparin cord blood). Syringe should be placed in wet ice slush immediately after draw.
Note:  1. If baby is not listed in computer system, order on requisition using mother’s Address-O-Graph®, but provide baby’s last name and sex (ie, “Smith, Baby Girl”).
2. Label specimen appropriately (venous).

Reference Values

pH:  7.20-7.50 pH units
pCO2:  27-43 mm Hg
pO2:  15-45 mm Hg
HCO3:  15-33 mmol/L
