Methodology

Conventional Culture
Includes Gram stain, isolation, identification, and susceptibility testing of aerobic organisms. Bronchial brushings will be examined for presence of anaerobic organisms upon request only.

Specimen Requirements

1. Submit 1 mL of 2 mL of aspirated specimen in a screw-capped, sterile container. This should be collected by a physician during a bronchoscopy procedure using a sterile technique. Avoid contaminating bronchoscope with tap water.
2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.
Note:  Specimen source is required on request form for processing.

Bronchoscopy specimens are usually contaminated with normal upper respiratory flora.
