Methodology

Conventional Culture
Includes Gram stain and routine aerobic culture for isolation and identification. Susceptibility testing is performed if organism is isolated.

Specimen Requirements

1. Submit 1 mL of spinal fluid (from the second tube drawn in a series of 4) in a screw-capped, sterile vial. Culture should be ordered on tube #2.
2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.

Note:  1. Specimen source is required on request form for processing.

2. Label specimen appropriately (tube #2).
