Ferritin is the chief storage form of iron in the body. This test can be used to monitor iron deficiency anemia.

Specimen Requirements

1 plasma gel tube (1ml of lithium heparin plasma) OR 1 serum gel tube (1 mL of serum). Centrifuge blood as soon as possible, or send unspun blood to laboratory within 4 hours of draw.

Reference Values

Males >20 years:  30-400 ng/mL
Females
17-60 years:  13-150 ng/mL
>60 years:  16-288 ng/mL
