Methodology

Conventional Culture with Direct Fluorescent (DFA) Antibody Stain
Specimens positive for legionella isolates will be sent to the Pittsburgh V.A. Medical Center for serogrouping.

Specimen Requirements

Acceptable Specimens:
Bronchial washings, bronchoalveolar lavage, bronchus fluid, chest fluid, chest tube drainage, empyema, endotracheal fluid, fresh lung tissue, induced sputum, lingula (lung), lung biopsy, pericardial fluid or tissue, pleura, pleural fluid, protected catheter brush, sputum, thoracentesis fluid, tracheal secretion, transbronchial biopsy, or transtracheal aspirate

 

1. Place specimen in a screw-capped, sterile container.

2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
Note:  Specimen source is required on request form for processing.

Negative
Positives will be identified to serogroup level.
