Specimen Requirements

  1. Sample Type:
    • Serum -Red or Tiger top.
    • Plasma: Lithium heparin(Dark Green), or PST (Light Green) tube.
  2. Sample Stability: 24 hours at 2 – 8 °C.
  3. Minimum volume for testing is 0.5 mL of serum, plasma.
  4. Criteria for Specimen Rejection:  Sample will be rejected under the following conditions:
    • Samples drawn in incorrect tube type.
    • Unlabeled or samples with questionable identification
    • Samples beyond the stability limits stated above.

Reference Values

  • Child/Adult: 275 – 295 mOsm/kg H2O.
  • >60 Years: 280 – 301 mOsm/kg H2O.
