Measurement of prolactin is used to evaluate patients with infertility, amenorrhea, or hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction.

Specimen Requirements

1 light green PST tube OR 1 red top serum separator tube OR 1 plain, red-top tube (2 mL of serum). Centrifuge blood as soon as possible and send specimen refrigerated, or send unspun blood to laboratory within 4 hours of draw.

Reference Values

Males:  4.0-15.2 ng/mL
Females:  4.8-23.5 ng/mL
