Conventional Culture
Includes culture for Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella, and Yersinia and reflex test for “Shiga Toxin I and II by Immunochromatographic Rapid Test”.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Freshly Passed Stool or Colonic Fluid
1. Collect entire freshly passed stool or colonic fluid in a sterile container not contaminated with urine, residual soap, or disinfectants.
2. Aseptically transfer specimen to a screw-capped, sterile container.
3. Send specimen refrigerated. Maintain sterility and forward promptly. If specimen storage is >1 hour, transport stool in Cary-Blair transport medium following instructions for specimen collection.
Note:  Specimen source is required on request form for processing.

 

Rectal Swab
1. Pass aerobic bacterial transport swab beyond anal sphincter. Swabbing of lesions of rectal wall or sigmoid colon during proctoscopy or sigmoidoscopy is preferred.
2. Rotate swab and withdraw.
3. Return aerobic swab to plastic sleeve.
4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly. Send specimen refrigerated if specimen storage is >1 hour.
Note:  Specimen source is required on request form for processing.

Reference Values

Negative for Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella, and Yersinia. Negative for Shiga Toxin I and II.
