Methodology
Conventional Culture for Acid-Fast Bacilli
Identification will be performed at Mayo Medical Laboratories, and
susceptibility testing will be performed at Mayo Medical
Laboratories when Mycobacterium tuberculosis is
identified. Susceptibility testing for other Mycobacteria
species will be performed off-site upon request.

Specimen Requirements
1. Collect entire first-morning specimen on 3 consecutive days from either a clean-catch, random specimen or from a catheterized specimen in a screw-capped, sterile container. No preservative. Testing on 3 consecutive days is recommended to increase the likelihood of detection.
2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient
temperature. Send specimen refrigerated if specimen storage
is >1 hour.
Note: 1. 24-Hour collection is not
acceptable.
2. Follow instructions in “Urine Collection”
in “Special Instructions.”
Reference Values
Negative (no mycobacteria isolated after 56 days)
If positive, mycobacterium will be identified.
