Test Code TRXN Transfusion Reaction Evaluation

Methodology

This test is useful for serological investigation for immune mediated hemolysis. Testing is indicated on a patient when signs of a reaction occur during or after receiving a transfusion.

Specimen Requirements

Draw a full, pink-top (K2 EDTA) tube. Forward promptly at ambient temperature.

Note:  1. Specify number of units required on request form.
2. Label specimen with patient’s name (first and last), medical record number or date of birth, and date and time of draw.
3. Initials of person drawing blood must be on tube.

Reference Values

If the initial basic investigation is positive, an extended work-up will be done. The nursing unit is phoned with a
preliminary report of the investigation and notified of any critical values discovered during the course of the investigation.
