Thyroid-stimulating hormone determination is the most useful and sensitive test for primary hypothyroidism.

Specimen Requirements

1 mL of Lithium Heparin plasma

  • Preferred Specimen:  Light Green Plasma Seperator Tube (PST) 
  • Acceptable Specimen: Dark Green Lithium Heparin tube

Centrifuge blood as soon as possible, or send unspun blood to laboratory within 4 hours of draw. Avoid hemolysis. 
Note:  Do not uncap tube once specimen is drawn.

Reference Values

0.270-4.200 µIU/mL
Low-end sensitivity:  0.005 µIU/mL
